Spartans close out season campaign with victory

The Sumner Spartans’ seniors made sure a disappointing basketball season ended on a high note. They scored 22 points in the final period for a 58-59 win over their district rivals, the Bonney Lake Panthers, in South Puget Sound League 3A play Feb. 13 at home.

The Sumner Spartans’ seniors made sure a disappointing basketball season ended on a high note. They scored 22 points in the final period for a 58-59 win over their district rivals, the Bonney Lake Panthers, in South Puget Sound League 3A play Feb. 13 at home.

The contest started with the teams trading 3-pointers. Bonney Lake took a 11-7 lead in the first period, but the Spartans rallied for a 26-24 halftime advantage.

The Panthers, led by Lawrence Williams and Kyle Bobbitt, regained the lead, 40-36, entering the final period.

Sumner took advantage of several Panther miscues and a smaller lineup in the final period.

Three Spartans scored in double figures. Will Bulzomi led the way with 15 points, Lui Koria had 13 and Casey Lafkas added 11.

For Bonney Lake, Williams finished with 14 and Bobbit hit 12.

It was the final game at home for Lee Baumgardner, Jordan Bone, Zeric Cage, Tema Koria, Jonney Greenwood, Bulzomi, Lui Koria and Lafkas. The seniors were recognized before the game.

The Spartans ended the season 4-16 and 3-13 in the 3A SPSL standings.

At home Feb. 10, White River needed a 17-11 run in the final period to pull out a league victory over the Spartans.

For the first three periods, Sumner stayed within striking distance and trailed by two at the end of three, 28-26.

Bulzomi paced the Spartans eight points, while Baumgarden, Bone and Lafkas had six each.
