The White River High girls picked up two more victories last week and now find themselves just three wins shy of a South Puget Sound League 2A basketball championship.

The Hornets, who built a perfect 10-0 league mark through games of last week, played third-place Eatonville Tuesday; results came too late to include here. The rest of the SPSL 2A campaign has White River hosting Franklin Pierce Thursday, traveling to Fife Saturday and – in what could prove to be the difference between first and second – hosting Sumner Tuesday.

The Franklin Pierce game is a change from the original schedule; the game was planned for Friday but was moved due to White River hosting a subregional wrestling tournament

Through games of last week, Sumner had built a 9-1 record, losing only to White River in a Jan. 18 tilt on their home court.

Last week’s games saw the Hornets whip Washington 64-37 Friday after crushing Steilacoom 72-33 Jan. 25.

The victory over Washington featured little drama as the Hornets sprinted to leads of 23-6 by the end of the first quarter and 37-16 by halftime. Brooke Paulson, the league’s leading scorer, popped in 23 points and fellow senior Sabra Sproul added 15.

The home contest against Steilacoom had gone much the same way, with the Hornets building a 35-17 advantage by intermission. A 24-point, third-quarter outburst sealed the victory.

Four White River players reached double figures, led by Paulson’s 21 points. Sproul chipped in with 20, Rani Weigand added 11 and Kennedy Hobert finished with 10.
