SHOPLIFTING

• Police responded to a report of shoplifting at 3:15 p.m. April 9 at a business along state Route 410. The reporting party was a 32-year-old male employee of the store who stated he observed a woman enter the store and begin to fill her own reusable shopping bags in cart with store items. There are signs inside stating not to fill reusable bags until items are paid for. The reporting party watched as the 26-year-old female suspect as she looked around, possibly to ensure nobody was watching her, and then exited the store without paying for the items, which totaled $435.21. The suspect was escorted into the store’s office upon attempting to leave. The suspect stated she did not intend to steal the items, since her sister would pay for them, and went outside the store to locate her sister. The woman had been arrested for theft, second degree, on March 29, using the same reusable bag method. The responding officer arrested her on the same charge and transported her to the Pierce County Jail, where she was booked. The woman was issued a permanent trespass from the store.

THEFT OF FIREARM

• An officer contacted a 37-year-old man via phone regarding the man’s handgun, which the man stated was stolen. He said he noticed it was stolen following a police response to a domestic violence incident at his residence. He said it was not in either of the two places he keeps it. He told the officer his 20-year-old roommate most likely took it. Police then contacted the 37-year-old at his residence regarding a theft report of the firearm. The man’s 33-year-old brother was at the residence and they both told officers they continued looking for the gun, but did not locate it. While officers were at the scene, the 20-year-old roommate returned and stated he did not take the gun. The 37-year-old man completed his report at the scene. Officers found an empty magazine and an extra round, which the 37-year-old stated he always kept. The 37-year-old asked a responding officer if police could determine which gun fired a round using a used shell casing and was told it was possible.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE

• An officer noticed a vehicle cross the center line in the 19000 block of SR 410 at approximately 11:21 p.m. on April 11. The officer contacted the 43-year-old female driver and smelled intoxicants in the car. The woman provided a Washington state identification instead of a driver’s license, which she said she didn’t have with her. She said she did not have anything to drink and swerved while talking on her cellphone. The responding officer stated the woman’s speech was slurred when she spoke. A computer check revealed the woman had a suspended license for unpaid tickets and she had an arrest warrant out of King County for reckless driving. Another officer arrived for backup and the responding officer asked the woman to exit her car. She did so without incident and agreed to field sobriety tests. The officer noticed her pupils were dilated during the gaze test and she made several mistakes during the walk and turn test, telling the officer several times, “This is hard.” She then did the standing test and made mistakes again. She refused to take a breath test and was arrested for suspicion of DUI and for the suspended license. She stated she did not drink but was on medication for depression and anxiety.

FALSE INFORMATION

• An officer stopped a driver at approximately 12:21 a.m. April 13 for driving a vehicle with a headlight out. The 59-year-old driver provided the officer with his brother’s name and date of birth because his license was invalid. The 59-year-old man’s driving status was “ID only” with no valid operator’s license. He was cited for providing false information and released. A 56-year-old passenger in the vehicle with a valid license then drove.
