Sumner High earns honors at state FFA convention

Sumner High School will send 27 students to the 82nd national FFA conference in October following successful competition at the state convention.
The school’s Meats Evaluation, Livestock Evaluation, Agricultural Communications, Food Science and Dairy Foods teams each captured first-place honors.
The Public Speaking team was second, the Ag Sales team was fourth and the First Year team placed eighth.
In individual competition, Kassandra Ognoskie took first in Meat Evaluation, while Katey Scholz was second.
Christian Reinke was second, Eric Larson fifth and Caitlin Quesenberry ninth in the Livestock Evaluation competition.
In Ag Communications, Sarah Josten placed second, Conner Mickelson was third, Tim Hurd sixth, Renee Valle eighth and Kellyn Walker was 10th.
Amanda Lee was first in Food Science, while Natasha Moffitt was third and Carly Lange took fifth. Alexis Brendible was first in Dairy Foods, with Larson third, Quesenberry eighth and Kevin Warren 10th.
Emily Campbell took first in Ag Sales.
Tristan Hanon placed second in Public Speaking with “On the Road To a Fuel Solution.”
Ag Science Fair: Individual winners from the Ag Science Fair were Tim Hurd for “Distribution of Vector-Borne Pathogens” in Microbiology, grades 10-12 and Carly Lange for “Piglet Casteration” in Animal Science, grades 7-9.
Team winners from the Ag Science Fair were:
• Becca Humphries and Kelsey Oliver for “OVHV-2 Shedding” in Microbiology, grades 10-12.
• Haylee Olson and Kasie McAfee for “Prolapse” in Animal Science, grades 10-12.
• Eric Larson and Jordan Swarthout for “Is it Worth the Count Bulbs” in Botany, grades 10-12.
• Alexis Brendible and Erin Frazier for “Big vs. Small, Ultrasound” in Ag Engineering, grades 10-12.
• Megan Cihak and Chase Barrus for “Dairy Struvite” in Botany, grades 7-9.
FFA Advisors are Ag Science teachers Rusty Finch and Greg Pile.
More than 7,000 FFA chapters are currently in existence; their programs are managed on a local, state and national level. Each chapter’s Program of Activities is designed with the needs of the students in mind. Activities vary greatly from school to school.
