Script contest focuses on Norman Rockwell

Published 4:49 pm Thursday, October 8, 2009

Many people who view a Norman Rockwell painting may think it tells a story and Ascension Productions is holding a contest giving imaginative scriptwriters the chance to create a story inspired by one of Rockwell’s works.

Scripts must be one act between 10 minutes and 40 minutes and have at least three characters and writers may include characters who are not visible in the illustration, but each character in the illustration must be represented in the script. Scripts must be mailed to or dropped off at the Ascension Theatre Productions office at 916 Cherry Ave. in Sumner. Scripts must be submitted by 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6. Entries must include the writer’s name, phone number and e-mail address on the last page of the script for notification purposes.

A panel of judges from Sumner, Tacoma and Seattle who are familiar with script production and theater education will critique the entries. The top three authors in each age category will be notified by phone, and your scripts will be presented in a reading style presentation by actors on Nov. 13 the evening prior to the Norman Rockwell event during Hometown Holiday on Nov. 14.

Next year Ascension Productions will produce the scripts as a live theatre option during the Hometown Holiday event.

The contest is divided into four categories divided by the ages of the entrants. Categories are for 10 to 13 years of age, 14 to 17 years of age, 18 to 25 years of age, and 30 years of age or older. One name in each age category will be drawn from a hat to see who wins a $50 shopping spree in downtown Sumner.
