The Sumner High boys tennis team didn’t start on a high note, dropping three matches – one to Franklin Pierce and two to undefeated Washington – but finished strong with a 3-2 win over White River Friday.
The Spartans are 6-5 overall.
With subdistricts around the corner, the Spartans played a close match with White River Friday with four of the five matches going to a third set.
Jacob Heuett stepped in the No. 1 singles role, replace Grant Fulton who was sick, and after dropping the first set won 6-2, 6-1.
After losing the first set and trailing 5-2 in the second, Jeff Bidniy stepped into the No. 2 spot and also won the final two sets 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
Scott Brown and Brandon Walsh won easily 6-2, 6-2.
Against Franklin Pierce, Heuett won 6-1, 6-1. Delbert Oxborrow and Bidniy teamed up a shortened win.
The Spartans’ two wins against Washington came in doubles with Brown and Walsh winning 6-1, 6-4 and Alex Landes and Oxborrow dropping the first 6-4, and then winning two straight 7-6, 6-2.
