Sumner High’s volleyball squad slipped a few notches in the South Puget Sound League 2A standings last week, losing to Eatonville and White River to make its league mark 4-3.

Sumner hosted a lively Eatonville six-pack in the Cruisers’ initial action of the season, losing to the visitors in a dramatic five sets.

The Spartans looked as though they might quickly be done with Eatonville, as Sumner won the first two sets, 25-18, 25-21.

After that the Cruisers refused to lose, as they bounced back to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-18 and in the sudden death overtime set 15-13.

The week didn’t get any easier Thursday when Sumner traveled to White River to mix it up with the Hornet crew.

The Spartans were no pushover, especially in the thrilling middle match, but they were forced to bow out after dropping three straight sets 25-20, 28-26 and 25-20.

Highlights on the week included senior setter Janille Panula accumulating a combined total of 25 assists, eight kills and seven aces in the tandem of SPSL 2A matches.
