Sumner High saw its perfect record slip away as DeShawn Moses crossed the goal line on a 16-yard run in the closing seven seconds of Friday night’s South Puget Sound League 2A game with Clover Park.
In a contest that seesawed back and forth all night, the Spartans ran out of time to answer Moses’ touchdown and carried home a 41-34 loss from Lakewood.
“We couldn’t stop them,” coach Keith Ross said. “We just couldn’t get any key stops defensively.
“It’s OK if we can learn from this. You never want to lose a game, but you can learn from it.”
Clover Park jumped out early on a 5-yard pass from Tana Pritchard to Brandon Harris.
Sumner answered in the second quarter on runs of two and 24 yards by Cody Haavik, who finished the night with 12 carries for 198 yards.
The Warriors’ Moses found the endzone and Pritchard found Brady Daly at the end of a 28-yard scoring strike to make it a 20-13 game at the half.
Sumner tied the game in the third quarter on a Haavik 50-yard scamper but Clover Park answered in the fourth with Moses scoring again, this time on a 23-yard run.
SHS’s Brendon Baker caught a 16-yard pass from Aaron Clark to bring the game back to even.
Clover Park took the lead on a 2-yard pass from Pritchard to Daly.
Clark answered on a two-yard keeper for the Spartans’ final score of the night.
“Aaron played well,” Ross said. “It was good to have him back.”
