SHS BOYS SWIM AND DIVE: Spartans finish fourth at subdistrict swim meet

The Sumner High boys swim team finished fourth at Saturday’s subdistrict meet in Lakewood.

It was the last chance for swimmers to qualify before the district meet, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Hazen High in Renton.

The Spartans were led by senior Evan Quaschnik who won the diving competition with a 306.90 points.

Connor Powers-Hubbard finished second, dropping .04 seconds in his 200-yard freestyle.

Trent Powers posted a 22.82 preliminary time in the 50 freestyle and then a 23.05 in the finals for second place.

Powers swam a 51.45 to place third in the 100 freestyle.

The Spartans’ 200 freestyle relay of Zane Gustafson, Powers-Hubbard, Sam Rigsby and Powers placed third with a time of 1.36.98. Gustafson dropped .44 seconds for a personal-best in his leg. In is leg of the second relay, Shayd Breckenridge dropped 2.36 seconds making the district cut as a leadoff swimmer.

Powers-Hubbard placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1.06.71. Gustafson was fifth with a 1.08.10 and Severn Anderson dropped 2.10 seconds for a personal-best of 1.12.50 placing seventh.

The team’s 400 freestyle relay placed fourth in the finals. Gustafson, Postal, Powers-Hubbard and Powers were just off their personal best with a time of 3.31.14.

Gustafson placed fifth in the 200 individual medley. His preliminary time was a personal best of 2.14.65.

SHS’s 200 medley relay took ninth. Jobe Layton led off with a best time in the 50 backstroke, followed by Anderson, Breckenridge and Pietro Postal.

Tanner Harrison dropped 5.84 seconds from his personal best to make the qualifying cut in the 100 butterfly, just missing the district time of 1.14.00; however the Spartans were able to place him in as a wildcard entry.

In the 100 backstroke, Rigsby, Quaschnik and Layton qualified.

Neil Bateman made the cut in the 200 freestyle and he and Postal also had qualifying times in the 100 freestyle.

Sam Rigsby, 11th overall in the 50 freestyle and teammates Postal and Curtis Downing all made the district cut.

Breckenridge placed 16th in the 500 freestyle, dropping 10.23 seconds for a time of 6.19.74, a district time.
