Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson and the entire city council were joined Friday by the 4th landing Support Battalion Marine Corps Color Guard Unit and members of the American Legion of Washington as the city officially unveiled a sign proclaiming Veterans Memorial Drive East.

Formerly known as the Sumner-Buckley Highway, the council in November passed an ordinance changing the name in honor of Veterans.

Also on hand for the ceremony were Rep. Chris Hurst and Rep. Cathy Dahlquist from the 31st District and members of the Bonney Lake Veterans Memorial Committee, who first proposed the name change in 2008.

Councilman mark Hamilton, who spearheaded the effort to rename the road, spoke of the road’s history as a military route between Fort Walla Walla and Fort Steilacoom and State American Legion Cmmander Jacob Cabaug thanked the city and reminded those in attendance of the sacrifices made by those who serve.

City Administrator Don Morrison capped off the event with a rendition of “Taps.”
