Multiple I-5 lane and ramp closures start Sunday

Nisqually to Tacoma, Washington State Department of Transportation crews will be out in force starting Sunday as they inspect bridges, repair pavement and accomplish other work. In the process, motorists will notice numerous closures along both northbound and southbound I-5. Some work, such as installing raised-pavement markers, is weather dependent and will be postponed with inclement weather. Other work, such as bridge inspections, will continue regardless of weather. The closures are scheduled to occur as follows.
Nisqually – 5 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19
· Close one southbound I-5 lane between Mounts Road and Nisqually River Bridge.
· Close one northbound I-5 lane over Nisqually River Bridge. Three crews will be working simultaneously in this area. One crew will trim trees along southbound I-5. A second crew will be doing preparatory work on the bridge for the upcoming I-5 Nisqually River Bridge painting project. A third crew will be performing a routine bridge inspection.
Nisqually –10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 19
· Open northbound I-5 lane at Nisqually River Bridge.
· Keep southbound I-5 lane closed between Mounts Road and Nisqually until 1 p.m. Motorists can also expect some rolling slowdowns for tree-trimming activities.
Tacoma – 9 p.m. Sunday, May 19
· Close two left lanes of northbound I-5 from South 56th Street to the Puyallup River Bridge.
Tacoma – 10 p.m. Sunday, May 19
- Reduce northbound I-5 to one lane and detour that lane onto Exit #132, the northbound collector/distributor, and back onto one open northbound I-5 lane.
Tacoma – 5 a.m. Monday, May 20
- Reopen I-5 facilities.
DuPont – 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 20
· Close right lane of northbound I-5 near Mounts Road while crews inspect the rail bridge. This work is part of WSDOT’s Point Defiance Bypass rail project.
DuPont – 10 p.m. Monday, May 20
· Open right lane of northbound I-5 near Mounts Road.
· Close two left lanes of northbound I-5 at Mounts Road for rail bridge inspection activities.
DuPont – 5 a.m. Tuesday, May 21
- Reopen northbound I-5 lanes at Mounts Road.
DuPont – 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21
- Close left lane of southbound I-5 near Mounts Road while crews inspect the rail bridge. This work is part of WSDOT’s Point Defiance Bypass rail project.
Tacoma – 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 21
- Close two left lanes of northbound I-5 from South 56th Street to the Puyallup River Bridge.
DuPont – 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 21
- Close the two left lanes of southbound I-5 at Mounts Road for rail bridge inspection activities. This work is part of WSDOT’s Point Defiance Bypass rail project.
Tacoma – 10 p.m. Tuesday, May 21
· Reduce northbound I-5 to one lane and detour that lane onto Exit #132, the northbound collector/distributor, and back onto one open northbound I-5 lane.
· Close the following ramps. Detours will be provided.
1) South 38th Street on-ramp to SR 7 and I-705;
2) southbound I-705 on-ramp to northbound I-5;
3) northbound I-5 exit to Portland Avenue. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible and to expect delays.
DuPont – 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 21
· Open left two lanes of southbound I-5.
· Close the right lane of southbound I-5 and the Mounts Road on-ramp to southbound I-5 for rail bridge inspection activities. This work is part of WSDOT’s Point Defiance Bypass rail project.
Tacoma and DuPont – 5 a.m. Wednesday, May 22
- Open all I-5 facilities.
Nisqually – 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22
- Close one lane of northbound I-5 for fiber optic cable work.
Tacoma – 10 p.m. Wednesday, May 22
- Close right lane of northbound I-5 between Portland Avenue and the Puyallup River Bridge and two exits: 1) northbound I-5 exit to State Route 167; and 2) SR 167 on-ramp to northbound I-5.
5 a.m. Thursday, May 23
- Open all above facilities.

4. Look for overhead and roadside electronic signs.
5. Program your radio to highway advisory stations, 530 AM or 1610 AM.
