The Bonney Lake Police Department will be implementing a new vehicle impound police and procedure taking effect May 1, 2015.
Bonney Lake Municipal Code 10.33 states all police impounds for driving under the influence (DUI) and driving while license suspended (DWLS) will be subject to a $100 administrative fee, which must be paid at the police department prior to the vehicle being released at the impound.
A DWLS driver with previous history may find their vehicle with a 30, 60, or 90 day hold.
An impound for DWLS is not mandatory and remains at the officer’s discretion, but it is encouraged for repeat offenders.
If your vehicle has been impounded by the BLPD you will need to do the following during business hours, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays:
1) Request a release form in person at the Bonney Lake Police Department
2) Pay the $100 administrative fee at the BLPD
3) Pay all impound and storage fees to the tow company and provide them the release form and administrative fee receipt.
The vehicle can only be released to the registered owner or legal owner.
The registered owner may request another person to redeem their vehicle but the owner must be present.
The person getting into the vehicle must have a valid driver’s license and proof on insurance.
DUI
– Arrest and a 12 hour hold
– $100 administrative fee
DWLS/R 3rd Degree
– No prior convictions means no hold
– One or more prior convictions equates to a 30 day hold
– $100 administrative fee
DWLS/R 1st or 2nd Degree
– No prior convictions means 30 day hold
– One conviction equates to a 60 day hold
– Two or more prior convictions equates to a 90 day hold
– $100 administrative fee
The purpose of this new policy is to keep non-licenses drivers and intoxicated drivers from having access to a motor vehicle.
An unlicensed driver is a potential danger to all other motorists on the highway, as they may not know the rules of the road or practice safe driving techniques.
A driver who is unlicensed, has a suspended or revoked driver’s license has been ordered with cause not to drive due to their previous driving violations.
Continuing to drive shows a flagrant disregard for the safety of other motorists.
