It’s the middle of the summer, and who’s bored? Not the kids at Pierce County Library, where dozens of summer reading opportunities exist for all ages through Aug. 30. Special programs for schoolkids, toddlers and even babies focus on superheroes, with prizes given for time spent reading.
Free Programs
Just a few of the programs available in the coming week: Enjoy Summer Stories for Babies for ages 0-2 at Gig Harbor Pierce County Library;Honk, Howl and Squeak for ages 6 and up at Tillicum Pierce County Library; and Summer Stories and Crafts for ages 3-6 at Parkland/Spanaway, Graham, Bonney Lake and Summit Pierce County Libraries. For a full list of free summer reading programs, see our kids’ summer reading schedule (PDF) or pick up a copy at your local library. Or visit the online calendar www.piercecountylibrary.org/calendar.
Prizes
For kids ages 4-12, download a reading log poster (PDF) or pick up a copy at your local Pierce County Library. Kids can win prizes for reading five, 10 and 15 hours, plus complete bonus activities for an additional prize and entry into the grand prize drawing. Reading 10 hours also brings a $5 reduction in library fines, and parents and caregivers can earn prizes, too. Parents of babies and toddlers can download a Wee Readers Log(PDF) or pick up a copy at your local library. Fill up the log by marking each time you read to your child or visit the library, and when the log is complete, you can bring it into the library to claim your prize.
Other Family Programs
Programs for teens and adults include:
- Ages 13-18—Teen Summer Reading Challenge: This online gaming and reading program encourages teens to meet challenges based on heroes we find everywhere. A young adult hero book list is included.
- Adults—Escape the Ordinary: Grown-ups can learn something new about outdoor adventures, heroic careers, unique crafts, books and more, all while earning points toward prizes. Reading to your kids or reading for work counts toward your reading hours.
