The White River Sting, a group of seventh-grade girls hailing from Buckley, simply wouldn’t be denied.

Gathering with other top teams from around the state, the Sting topped the field and returned home with a championship in hand.

The Washington Middle School Basketball championship was staged March 11-13 in Spokane.

Playing in the Silver Division, the Buckley girls opened tournament play with a 49-29 victory over a squad from Bellevue. That was followed by an afternoon, 48-32 win over a Kelso team.

Taking on Snohomish at 8 a.m. Sunday, the Sting rolled to a 44-20 triumph. With a very quick turnaround time, the squad was on the court against Cle Elum for the tourney finale, a game that resulted in a 57-42 win for the Sting.

This year’s seventh-grade Sting program features some “really hard-working girls,” according to coach Brandon Scarpaci who finished his first year leading the program.

The state champion squad consists of Addy Walthers, Charley-Jo Cochran, Kaidyn Johnson, Kalese Turgeon, Macie Doyle, Madelyn Jameyson, Maggee Schmitz, Malia Froemke and Myia Olson.
