A pair of hikers discovered human remains in a remote area near Carbonado last weekend, and Pierce County detectives are now working on identification with the Medical Examiner’s office.

The hikers called in their discovery to 911 dispatchers at 2:39 p.m. on Sunday, according to a Pierce County Sheriff’s Department press release. The hikers led deputies and a search and rescue coordinator to the remains, and detectives returned to the area Monday to collect them.

“At this time, there is not enough information to determine the cause of death,” the sheriff’s department noted in a press release Tuesday.

Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Darren Moss said in an email that the agency will be able to release more information once the Medical Examiner’s office has finished their investigation. If the person can’t be identified, the sheriff will ask the public for help, Moss said.
