The one year anniversary of John Lewis’ death was marked by a protest in his honor July 17. Lewis was a U.S. congressman from Georgia for 33 years.

In roughly 1,600 cities across the United States, including Enumclaw, people came out to remind us that we have the right to protest the inhumanities and chaos presently in our federal government.

It is understood that tariffs need upgrading. It is understood the national debt, $36,000,000,000,000, needs to be controlled. It is understood that immigrants through centuries have always contributed to this country.

What is not understood is why Congress and the Supreme Court refuse to stand up to this administration that uses threats and intimidation to accomplish their goals.

Is this how democracy works or are we headed for an autocracy? John Lewis fought for our civil and human rights and promoted “good trouble” by citizens.

Time will tell if we allow this chaos to continue.
