Members of the Enumclaw High volleyball program spent a recent Saturday along the banks of South Prairie Creek, planting trees that will aid in the restoration of the salmon-spawning stream.

The team was on hand Nov. 8, volunteering as part of an ongoing effort by the Pierce Conservation District. The district purchased the former farmland, sitting along Pioneer Way between South Prairie and Orting, and has been rehabilitating the creek for native salmon.

The volleyball turnout was, according to coach Barbie Becker, “a great opportunity for our players to earn volunteer hours, give back to our community and learn about ecosystems and salmon.”

Her team eventually planted 20 trees along the creek, Becker reported.

The Pierce Conservation District is one of nearly 3,000 such districts found across the United States. They aim to help in the conservation of land, water, forests, wildlife and other natural resources.
