The Federal Emergency Management Agency is providing the King County grant funds for a culvert replacement north of Enumclaw.

According to a April 23 press release, the county is receiving almost $930,000 to design the culvert under SE 424th Street, which will aim to reduce flooding on the Newaukum Creek.

That’s just a small slice of the $21 million pie, which also went to Hillsboro and La Grande, Oregon, Snohomish County, and the Washington State Department of Ecology; these grants were part of a $250 million in grants for other projects nationwide to address a backlog of mitigation projects.

These awards come from FEMA’s, Flood Mitigation Assistance, which encourages states to mitigate flood risks.

According to the county, the culvert — a 24-inch corrugated metal pipe — is undersized and “is exacerbating flooding issues for the adjacent property owners.” It will be replaced with a box culvert, which will allow water to flow freely under the road.
