Letter to the Editor: We must return to ideologically neutral education

Systemic indoctrination is the problem here in Enumclaw, Washington and everywhere else.
A healthy educational system encourages critical thinking. Systemic indoctrination is the sustained, institutional shaping of beliefs through one‑sided instruction, limited dissent, and controlled narratives, often embedded in education or public systems in ways that discourage independent judgment.
Systemic indoctrination often feels “normal” because it’s woven into long‑standing institutional practices. It’s reinforced socially. It’s presented as “common sense” or “the only responsible view.” It’s not just “teaching ideas.” It’s teaching ideas in a way that prevents questioning them.
Selective omission: When certain facts, perspectives, or historical events are consistently excluded. Framing dissent as immoral or dangerous and when disagreement is portrayed as a threat rather than a viewpoint.
Examples from our classrooms displaying “gay pride flags,” “political ideologies,” etc.
Every student in Enumclaw should feel safe and respected at school. At the same time, our classrooms should remain neutral spaces focused on learning, not on promoting any particular cultural or political symbol.
Students deserve safety and respect. Classrooms should stay neutral, focused on teaching—not signaling. Inclusion must be for everyone, not tied to any political or cultural symbol.
