Letter to the Editor: I am commanded to love

I had intended to write this letter in response to Nancy Butler’s letter, and I do hope to answer one of her questions directly since she seemed to think that I had avoided answering it. But first I would like to thank Kristopher Galvin for his letter (“Letter writer misunderstands Christianity,” published June 24). He defended what I was trying to say as well, or better, than I could have done myself, and he saved me the time and energy. Thank you brother!

Nancy felt that I had avoided answering the following question: “Is it Christian to support Trump or not?”

I stated that I prayed for all presidents, including President Trump, in my previous letter that Nancy seemed to have such difficulty dealing with. From my perspective, when I pray for someone that is a way of showing support for them. I think that there needs to be a distinction made between supporting a person and supporting every decision they make, be they a politician or otherwise.

So, although I don’t agree with everybody’s political or religious views, I can still support them in prayer.

To restate my understanding of what it means to be a Christian (as I did in my letter that started this whole exchange with Nancy), I am commanded to love everyone. To me, the most significant expression of love is to pray for someone not to miss heaven when there time on planet earth is done.

I was disappointed that Nancy did not make it to the monthly Brewski with a Newskie get together last time. I was looking forward to meeting her. Maybe next time? (Note: It’s been moved from the first Wednesday of the month to the first Tuesday) Hopefully we can both make it if our schedules allow.
