Local touch adds warmth to welcome

After four years in the works, the city of Buckley has at long last installed welcome signs on the west and the east ends of its city limits off state Route 410.
Buckley City Administrator David Schmidt said the budget for the project is $12,000, raised by past years' community development Christmas tree auctions, only $4,000 of which has been spent thus far.
The twin 16-ton slabs were donated by Chuck Nelson of the Wilkeson Sandstone Quarry and were set in place two weeks ago.
“The project is not complete yet,” Schmidt said. “We still have to fortify and frame the rocks and we are going to run electricity to them and shine floodlights on them. Additionally, we plan to do some landscaping around them.”
The reason it has taken the city such an inordinate amount of time to initiate the project is a practical one, according to Schmidt. “We were asking the folks at the quarry to furnish us with a specific sized piece of sandstone and you can't expect them to just blast away and immediately locate the exact size you are looking for. Things like this take time.”
