Sunrise students make cents of helping Haitians

Sunrise Elementary School students Mackayla and William Staley and Dade Dodd plunk their loose change into a collection jar in the main office before school recently as part of a fundraising effort for Haiti.
Dodd, a fourth-grade student, said he found the change that filled his plastic bag around the house.
In the office, Julia Stanton and Wanda Madill said they’ve been impressed with how many children have emptied their own piggy banks to help the earthquake victims.
Teacher Diane Hammons couldn’t believe how quickly her class mobilized the relief effort. She said students said they wanted to help, and in one day had posters lining school walls, fliers going home with students and had alerted the school of their project.
Her fourth- and fifth-grade students also keep track of the funds. As of Feb. 10, students have raised more than $1,000, which will be donated to the Red Cross for Haitian Relief.
