The Sumner High girls claimed the No. 2 seed out of Saturday’s subregional basketball tourney and open West Central District play Thursday.

The Spartans will take on the winner of a Clover Park/Kingston match up at 8 p.m. at Tacoma’s Foss High.

Sumner split a pair of subregional games, first beating the highly-touted crew from Port Angeles 51-41 Thursday night. To pick up the win, SHS had to outgun Port Angeles 16-5 in the game’s final frame.

Sumner senior backcourt ace Erika Olsen scored 21 points and buried 7-of-8 tries from the charity stripe.

That win put Sumner in the winner’s bracket against familiar foe White River, a team the Spartans fell to twice during the regular season. The two met Saturday to decide the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds to district play.

Sumner held a late lead but White River outscored the Spartans 17-9 in the final quarter to win 60-54.
