Sumner High’s young fastpitch squad was a rare no-show in the 2010 South Puget Sound League 3A subdistrict tourney.
But that’s ancient history for the Spartans, playing under the tutelage of energized mentor Kristin Crawley in the new South Puget Sound League 2A.
If a talented battery and an influx of skilled young infielders is any measurement of things to come, SHS may be about to take a distinct turn for the better.
While most 2A contingents are fortunate to have one or maybe two serviceable pitchers, this year’s Spartans will boast a fearsome foursome of proven windmillers and a formidable senior catcher to call the pitches in Dani Babcock. The pitching crew consists of sophomores Marissa Filipowicz and Allie Sims and juniors Megan Anderson and Taylor McCarthy.
McCarthy was the most often utilized hurler for the Sparts last year.
As for the hitters, Crawley said junior first baseman Sara Heuett may well be at the top of the list.
“Sara put in the hours in the batting cage this summer, fall and winter,” Crawley said. “I think she has her hands and body in the right position to hit the ball well for us this season.”
Also at Crawley’s disposal when the going gets tough are several younger position players. Ordained as the starting shortstop, from nearly the moment she set foot upon the practice field, was sophomore transfer from Cascade Christian High School, Robi Long.
Also bound to improve an infield that made too many errors last season will be freshman Kaitlyn Shearer, who will be just what the doctor ordered, according to Crawley.
Filling out the lineup with a sprinkling of veteran athleticism and hitting will be Laree Rommel, Darby Kenyon, Kaylee Cline and Angie Sanchez.
