Seeking its first league title since 1976, the Sumner High boys golf team took a step closer with wins over second-place Franklin Pierce Sept. 27 and Washington Thursday. A three-point loss, 51-48, to Fife Sept. 29 dropped their record to 9-1, but should keep them in the hunt for a piece of the title.

In Thursday’s 51-21 victory over Washington, Austin Spanier earned medalist honors at 5-over par at the Spartans’ home course at the Linden Country Club.

In the Spartans’ 66-46 win over the Cardinals, Brandon Barlow earned his fourth medalist title of the season with a 1-over par 37 at Linden Country Club. Spanier and Kai Taylor finished at 41.

Spanier and Barlow, both juniors, are one-two respectively in league scoring and two of four SHS golfers in the league’s Top 10. Taylor and Tom Murphy are the others.

On the girls side, the Lady Spartans picked up a 48-20 win over Washington Thursday with Rebecca Turcotte sharing medalist honors with Washington’s Jasmine Kim.

The Sumner High girls lost 46-36 to Franklin Pierce Sept. 27 and 66-34 Sept. 29 to Fife.
