Both Sumner and Bonney Lake high schools will be sending cross country representatives to Saturday’s state meet in Pasco.
After Saturday’s Westside Classic – the WIAA West Central District meet at Lakewood’s American Lake Golf Course – the cream definitely rose to the top.
For Sumner’s girls, who took sixth overall, running in a tough Class 2A field, Gabby Phelps held her own, finishing 19th overall with a clocking of 20 minutes, 15 seconds.
Bonney Lake’s girls, who tied for fourth with Capital, will be sending a team to run at Sun Willows Golf Course. A tandem of BLHS super sophomores, Marie Wilson and Sierra Espinal, ran to 10th and 12th place finishes on the soggy 3- mile American Lake course, with times of 19:53.7 and 20:00, respectively.
The handful of other Panther girls rounding out the state-bound BLHS crew are Hope Dickson, Hailey Thariault, Alise McCoy, Emily Campbell and Chloe Beal.
From the Sumner boys team, only Cory Brandt qualified to run with the state pack. Brandt crossed the finish line in 25th place, turning in a time of 17:06.3.
Bonney Lake participants Nolan Weber, Reed Hawkins and Bryant Maxey were all present for Saturday’s stampede, but none qualified to run at state.
