Since losing to league-leading White River 46-40 in the middle of January, the Sumner High girls basketball squad has won every game and averaged 65 points per engagement.
In those games leading up to Tuesday’s rematch against the Hornets to decide the South Puget Sound League 2A championship, SHS has been lifted by the scoring of Angie Sanchez, who has been accounting for close to a third of those 65 points in each of the past six games.
Sanchez was on fire as she racked up 14 points in a 66-21 laugher over Washington, 17 points in a 74-58 victory over Clover Park and 19 points in a Saturday home triumph over Steilacoom.
The calkwalk over Steilacoom made SHS’s SPSL 2A record 12-1. A White River win would give the Hornets the title outright; a Sumner win would produce co-champions.
“White River isn’t ranked as one of the best 2A girls basketball teams in this state by accident,” Coach Robert Thayer said. “White River basically has three all-leaguers and none of the 10 seniors on this Sumner team have ever experienced victory over the Hornets. So when we come to their house in hopes of claiming at least a share of the league title, the first thing we had to do, is get over that mental hurdle, because we are pretty good too.”
