Published 12:52 pm Thursday, October 17, 2013

At 10:17 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, the City of Bonney Lake staff participated in The Great Washington Shake Out to promote awareness and preparedness for an earthquake.

According to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), more than 1,000 earthquakes occur in our state annually. There have been over 20 “damaging” earthquakes in our state during the past 125 years.

In 2001, the 6.8 Nisqually Earthquake had 40 seconds of strong shaking with the epicenter just off the Nisqually delta in Puget Sound. The quake was felt as far north as Vancouver, BC and as far south as Salem, Ore. as far east as Spokane, and as far southeast as Salt Lake City, Utah.
