WRHS GIRLS BASKETBALL: White River record still clean

The White River High girls picked up two more victories to remain unscathed in South Puget Sound League 2A basketball play.

Staying undefeated allowed the Hornets to keep pace with the Sumner Spartans, who also added to wins during the week. The Hornets and Spartans squared off in Sumner Tuesday night to determine first place; results came too late to be included here.

Neither of last week’s victories provided much of a challenge for the Hornets, who won the pair by an average of 29 points. First came a 68-33 victory at Franklin Pierce Jan. 11, followed by a 52-29, home-court win Friday night over the Fife Trojans.

Friday’s contest was close for eight minutes, but the Hornets took control with a 14-2 advantage in the second quarter. A 16-6 third period sealed the deal.

Brooke Paulson and Rani Wiegand scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, to provide most of the offensive punch.

The earlier victory over Franklin Pierce was highlighted by a defensive effort that allowed the Cardinals only 13 points in the first half. During that span, White River poured in 28 to take control.

Paulson scored a game-high 23 points to lead three Hornets in double figures. Wiegand added 14 points and Sabra Sproul contributed 11.
