The Enumclaw Police Department responded to a burglary call on Aug. 24, resulting in the suspect barricading himself in a 7-Elevent building and a fire.
The EPD received the call around 3:07 a.m., and dispatch informed officers that the male suspect had barricaded himself in the employee office and refused to exit.
Enumclaw officers responded, assisted by Black Diamond Police Department, attempted to coax the suspect out. However, he remained unresponsive and out of sight.
Officers retreated to their vehicles to await additional backup. Upon arrival of more officers, smoke began emanating from the roof, prompting a request for Enumclaw Fire Department assistance. Within minutes, the store was filled with smoke, obscuring visibility.
Officers approached the front doors, opened them, and issued verbal commands, at which point the male suspect emerged with his hands raised, drenched in water, and compliant. He was taken into custody for investigation of arson.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect had entered the store, requesting free fuel and food, which was denied by the employee, prompting him to flee and lock himself in the office.
The suspect admitted to starting the fire by igniting cigarette packs.
No robbery or weapons were involved.
Enumclaw Fire Department extinguished the fire, and the scene was secured with crime scene tape for investigators. The suspect was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital, medically cleared, and then taken to the Enumclaw jail, where he was placed on a felony hold for Arson Second Degree.
No injuries occurred, and the suspect was the sole individual inside when the fire started.
The Courier-Herald does not identify suspects of a crime until charges are officially filed.
