10 years of Death by Chocolate

What’s better than chocolate? Death by chocolate, obviously. The Bonney Lake Lions club is hosting its one and only annual fundraiser, Death by Chocolate, at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, March 12, in the Bonney Lake High School commons area.

The Panther fastpitch team is eager to play ball after last year’s disappointing 8-12 record, said seven-season coach Andrew Sage. Bonney Lake will see many players from last season return to the team, including seniors Melanie Torr and Robin Morin, juniors Eleseana Quintanar, Kira Mitchell, Emma Sulkosky and Joey Ahern, and sophomore Raelyn Kimmel.

New school chickenpox vaccine requirement for all highschoolers

Starting this fall, area high school students must have received their two doses of chickenpox vaccine before they start classes. This will mark the end of a nine-year Washington State Department of Health chickenpox vaccine implementation plan that started requiring kindergarten students to get their second chickenpox vaccine dose in the 2008-2009 school year.

Sumner preschool gives students the Washington outdoor experience

Sumner’s first all outdoor preschool is getting ready to welcome its first spring and summer season. The Timber Creek Farm and Forest school was opened by Matt and Tinneca Fortin September 2015 in order to give toddlers and elementary school children the chance to experience the outdoors, something they think many children no longer get a chance to do.

Cascade Water Alliance starts refilling Lake Tapps

The signs of spring are all around us – the robins are chirping, the flowers are blooming, and Cascade Water Alliance has started diverting water into Lake Tapps. The company stopped releasing water from the lake in the beginning of February. Filling the lake from White River was set to begin March 1.

Bonney Lake brought the heat to this year’s ProStart Invitation state culinary competition, placing first among 14 schools and earning the right to cook at the national competition in April. The Panther team consisted of Dolton Workman, Breanna English, Asaiah Berden and team captain Conor Lees.

It’s looking like Bonney Lake has a handle on the flooding that has plagued some city residents for the past couple months. Residents along 62nd Street behind Lakeridge Middle School started noticing at the end of December that rain water wasn’t draining back into the ground like in previous years.

East Pierce levy lift on April ballot

East Pierce Fire and Rescue is once again asking its residents for more revenue by putting a levy lift measure on the April special election ballot. This levy lift measure comes a year and a half after the department asked voters to renew a Maintenance and Operations levy, which did not receive enough votes to pass and cut East Pierce’s budget by $3 million.

Bonney Lake, Enumclaw and Sumner competed in the 3A state swim and dive championship. The meet took place Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center.

Bonney Lake begins pumping flood water

With floodwaters in Bonney Lake continuing to rise, the city raced to set up a water pump to take the water off 62nd Street and into Lake Tapps. The flood started in late December, when residents began noticing that water on 62nd Street, 187th Street and the intersection of 188th and 62nd was not returning to the ground and started covering the roads.

The Washington Poison center has released itsyearly summary of e-cigarette exposure calls. According to the center, e-cigarette exposures were generally lower in 2015 than in 2014, and received a total of 156 calls.
