BETTER SAFE THAN LAHAR-Y: Students at the Carbonado Historical School District were among those participating in a regional lahar drill last month, walking along an evacuation route from their school the morning of Friday, April 29. White River students, further away from the danger zone of a potential lahar, drilled by sheltering-in-place instead. Lahars are fast-moving slurries of mud, ice and debris, belched by volcanoes or triggered by avalanches. Large, community-threatening Mt. Rainier lahars occur roughly once every 500 to 1,000 years, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, meaning theres a roughly 1-in-10 chance of a lahar reaching the Puget Sound lowland during an average human lifespan.
