Letter to the Editor: Admissions, hiring practices still heavily tribal

Reader Stanley McKie responds to a letter about equity and division

I agree with Inez Petersen’s use of Dr. King’s quote about conscientious stupidity and ignorance (“Equity is inherently divisive and discriminatory”, published Aug. 2).

Perhaps, Inez Petersen should recite the quote ten times or however long it takes for her to overcome her naïveté and myopia. I can quote Dr. King too: “Racial segregation reduces some persons to the status of things. Hence, segregation is morally wrong.”

Inez Petersen: Do you think Jared Kushner should have been admitted to Harvard University? How about George W. Bush? Should he have been admitted to Yale University? I want to know.

Any cursory glance at any news outlet or statistical analysis will prove to Inez Petersen and everyone that entrenched and persistent caste systems, tribalism and legacy practices in this country continue to be a factor in the usual categories in hiring and school admissions.

Knowing the facts is central and important to any argument. I’ll dignify your comments just this one time: Your poor attempt to mock me (i.e.Carnac ) and my opinion is juvenile and deflection.

I also think that attempting to persuade voters on how to vote in this column suggests a presumptuousness that I can’t measure.

Also, I wish to offer genuine gratitude to frequent letter writer Larry Benson. I admire his needed scholarship. Press on, sir.
