Letter to the Editor: Belief without evidence is a dangerous thing

Reader Larry Benson argues that whether it’s religion or politics, you’ve got to have facts to bolster your beliefs.

Many people ask me why I constantly rail against faith and belief systems, so I hope this will help explain the reasons faith based belief systems are a real danger to our society.

When a person “believes” something with no substantial evidence, or especially in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, they have basically suspended the use of the logical part of their brain and given it over to just about anyone who will easily convince them of what they already chose to believe. Example: There is overwhelming evidence that, many, if not all of the supposed events in the Bible, Torah, Quran, etc., never really happened and a thorough reading of the bible with an open mind would make it clear to most people, but many Christians chose to let their clerics interpret their holy books and take that as gospel.

Another example: In spite of, again, overwhelming evidence that Trump has been a con man and a fraud all of his adult life, a lot of people think that he was a good president and want him in that office again. Joel Olsteen is another great example of how easily gullible people can continue to be bilked out of millions of dollars by charlatans.

We have all seen why this belief without evidence can be dangerous by the prime example of the January 6th insurrection and all of the threats that have been directed at anyone and everyone trying to hold Trump accountable for the many crimes he has committed against our country. Belief without evidence is just simply not a reasonable way to live your life. Looking at the world with a skeptical and inquiring mind will give you a much better result. Just sayin’.
