Letter to the Editor: I’m glad Trump supporters showed up

Reader Larry Benson also says protesters are everyday people, not militants.

I was actually kind of glad to see the Trump supporters at Saturdays rally against Trump policies and his attempt to turn our country into an autocracy.

Why, you might ask, was I happy to see Trump supporters there? Because it brought into sharp contrast the number that support him (I’m guessing maybe 40) and all of us who don’t, which was around 700.

There was at least one Trump supporter that was carrying a big Trump flag walking up and down the street and also carrying a gun on his hip but if he was doing that to intimidate the protesters, he failed miserably because nobody gave him a second thought.

I saw a group of them some time after the rally was over out on Griffin and was tempted to actually thank them in person for their participation but I thought better of it and just walked on by.

So far, unfortunately these protests have had little impact on Trump or his policies, their attitude so far seems to be “who cares.” I feel that until these protests get much more disruptive to business as usual they will take little notice of them. What I think we need is a nationwide strike that would actually shut the country down, that is something that would surely get their attention and possibly make them change some things.

On a similar note, I don’t know who the cartoonist is for the Courier-Herald now but they certainly seem to have a right wing bias.

As witness their description of a protester today, the cartoonist’s description of today’s protesters (see Oct. 8 editorial cartoon) actually bears a stronger resemblance to the ICE agents that are reeking so much havoc on the streets of our country, showing up at apartment complexes and zip tying children, and shooting pepper bullets at priests.

All of the videos I have seen of the constant protests have been of ordinary citizens in every day clothing peacefully holding signs and shouting slogans.

If any protesters that the cartoonist has actually seen look like their depiction, I would hope they could provide actual pictures and not their poorly contrived false depictions of the majority in this country who are fed up with Trump’s gestapo tactics, pulling innocent and many times legal citizens of our country off our streets.

Don’t forget the lines that lead up to, “When they came for me, there was no one left to speak up.” Just sayin’.
