Letter to the Editor: What’s the big deal about ALPRs?

Reader Larry Benson says law enforcement is already using this tech, so why not expand it?

While Shawn Johnson and I normally agree on all things political, as can be gathered by our many letters to the editor in the past, I have to ask of her this time if she is offering a solution in search of a problem. (“Enumclaw is a safe city. Why do we need Flock safety cameras?” published Aug. 20.)

I will preface this letter with the fact that Shawn and I have been friends for nearly 40 years.

So the city will be able to read your license plate, what, exactly, makes this a problem? Any information anyone can gather from this information is already readily available to anyone at the DMV, what make and year of my vehicle, who owns it, where they live and maybe how long they have owned the vehicle in question, so what?

Now if my license plate is on a vehicle other than my own, this may be a subject of further investigation, was my license plate stolen to put on another vehicle, which may be stolen also, and if so, wouldn’t you want law enforcement to know something like that? Wouldn’t you be glad that they could spot something like that and possibly take some sort of action?

Other than that, like I said earlier, all of the information law enforcement could gather from my license plate is already available, so, maybe I’m missing something, if so, please feel free to share those details because I’m totally in the dark, so enlighten me if you will. Just sayin’.
