It’s now confirmed. The votes are in. I am now an official board member of Stage Door Productions.

What does that mean? It means that I, along with my fellow board members, will assist in the planning and producing of theatrical shows for our communities on the Plateau. I have not been with Cascade Foothills Choral for a few years, but during the decades that I was with CFC I spent most of my time participating as a board member and planning concerts that I performed in as well.

My friend Bonnie Azzelino has also joined the ranks of SDP board member while she finishes her final term as president of Cascade Foothills Chorale. Working with a nonprofit performing organization has become second nature to us. We join Frank Thompson, founder and president of SDP, and Stephanie Venrick, current board members who have helped produce some incredible shows for your enjoyment.

We are in the midst of planning the SDP Summer Youth Camp which involves interviewing new candidates for the role of director and producer. SDP summer camp will be performing “Honk.”

Long-time summer camp director Stu Johnson stepped down late last year, which opens a door for new talent to step in. Johnson’s years of contribution to the performing arts will always be appreciated and we wish him the very best.

We are also checking off the list of preparations to put on our annual spring show which will be “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Stage Door will bring this Biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors to life in this delightful musical parable in April. I get goose bumps every time I play the CD, which is every day, so you can see why I’m addicted to the performing arts! I am a true believer in taking an audience through the journey of emotions ranging from joy, sadness, suspense and laughter with live performance. I also love the process of putting it all together.

Auditions will take place for “Joseph” at 2 p.m. Jan. 30 and 7 p.m. Jan. 31 in the KeyBank community room, 1212 Cole St. in Enumclaw. All parts are open and include actors from all ages, young and old. This play will include a youth chorus and adult roles. Come prepared to sing 16 bars of a Broadway song and tell a joke. Performing art organizations evolve, change and grow just like other organizations. People will change interests or take on other responsibilities. Change is healthy and challenging. New doors open which bring new opportunities for a variety of people. This keeps the arts fresh and alive with new ideas and creativity.
