Hungry Housewives host 11th annual craft show

Some proceeds go to the Friends of the Carbon Canyon to help lobby for rebuilding the Carbon River/Fairfax bridge.

The holiday season is just around the corner, and the 11th annual Hungry Housewives craft show may be just the place to find a special gift.

The show fills up the Glacier Middle School cafeteria with more than 120 booths of vendors and crafters.

The event is free, but the first 40 shoppers receive a goodie bag “filled with the coolest items,” organizer Alisa Garate wrote in a Facebook event page.

Raffle tickets will be sold at the door for $5 to raise money for the Friends of the Carbon Canyon, a grassroots group that supports the Carbon Canyon area near the town of Wilkeson.

Friends of the Carbon Canyon was originally formed to protect the natural area, and usually holds annual clean-up event that removes garbage, graffiti, and even abandoned vehicles around the bridges and forest.

However, it has recently become immersed in supporting the city, businesses, and residents after the April 14 closure of the Carbon River/Fairfax bridge has led to an economic emergency in the area.

“Currently, the Friends are helping out residents of the Carbon Canyon with [general mobile radio service] radios and equipment because there is no cell service in the Carbon Canyon, landlines were taken down last November and never repaired by CenturyLink, [and] residents do not have a way to communicate with each other in case of an emergency, several cannot call 911,” President Jill Cartwright said.

The organization has also purchased AEDs and a mobile first aid/CPR grab-and-go backpacks for residents on the other side of the closed bridge, as it can take EMS up to 90 minutes to reach that area.

A free raffle ticket is also available to people who complete a brochure hunt by visiting specific vendors.
