Enumclaw High School sophomore clarinetist James Mitsuyasu was recently named to the 2005 Washington All-State Band that will perform in Tacoma March 13. Mitsuyasu performs with Enumclaw’s wind ensemble, jazz band and Hornet band. He auditioned for and was selected to the all-state band as well as the Western International Band Clinic Honor Band.

The Enumclaw trail was formally dedicated recently has been attracting both walkers and cyclists. During ribbon-cutting ceremonies the hoe was expressed that, someday, the trail will cross the White River and connect to Buckley, South Prairie, Orting and Puyallup.

Ten Years Ago

December 22, 1999

Milt trembly was finally able to be the bearer of good news about the White River School District’s new transportation center. He told the school board Phase I of the project has sailed along smoothly, and the site along SR-410 is ready for construction.

Five bikes were among the donations to Enumclaw’s Toys for Tots this year. Volunteers collected more than 1,000 toys and $2,000 in donations for its annual holiday event. Families in need were invited to the Enumclaw community Center Saturday to choose a present for their children and have it wrapped. At the same time, Enumclaw Kiwanians were giving out food baskets purchased by the Helping Hand fund. Kiwanians filled more than 450 boxes with ingredients for a holiday feast.

December 20, 1984

Efforts to save the old Enumclaw junior high school through a $4.5 million renovation proposal have ailed due to a lack of financial support, the Enumclaw School Board was told Monday night during a special meeting in the district offices. With the failure of the proposal, which would have meant a 99-year lease of the building, the board took the first steps toward selling the 63-year-old structure.

Dr. Robert W. Morrison, Enumclaw optometrist, recently announced that Dr. Paul Shepherd has joined his practice at 1626 Cole Street. Shepherd is a recent graduate of the Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton. He will offer full-scope family vision care with a specialization in contact lenses and vision therapy.

December 24, 1959

Advice was received this week that the Courier-Herald has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in Journalism for 1959. The Courier-Herald’s nomination was made in the division for “disinterested and meritorious public service rendered by a United State’s newspaper, published daily, Sunday or at least once a week, during the year.” The newspaper was notified of its nomination for the high honor by John Hohenberg, secretary of the Advisory Board on Pulitzer Prizes at Columbia University, New York City.

“ I want this week’s ‘Cuhweah Hehud’, please,” says four year old Teresa Ann Clark as she lines up each Wednesday at the Courier-Herald counter. Teresa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leaon Clark, 1222 Pioneer Street, and has been the Courier-Herald’s star customer for several months. The diminutive miss carries on a spritely conversation with the office personnel each week as she waits patiently for the first edition.

December 21, 1934

Louie Such of the Mt. View Service Station has just received one of the new 1935 Hudson Six automobiles. The car received by Such is being used as a demonstrator and is attracting wide attention due to the beauty and new innovations on the car, one of which is a new electric finger gear shift. The old traditional gear shift is done away with by this new invention.

A complete Christmas program has been arranged for the holidays at the Presbyterian Church, with the public invited to attend. Participants will be Tootsie Kurfurst, Marilyn Ebling, Dean Duncan, Wallace Urie, Caroline Angman, Claire Moregeli, Lavera Martinelli, Allan Neher, the Sorensen boys trio, Patsy Falcus, Diane Thomson, Valerie Peterson, Lois Buck, Erna Jean Williams, Pauline Campbell, Donald Hodges, Kenneth Brown and Ralph Smith.

With an attendance estimated at nearly two thousand people, the new Krain Ballroom and hall two miles north of Enumclaw was dedicated in impressive fashion. The largest crowd to ever attend a dance in this district was on hand to celebrate the big opening and all went away with glowing words for the new ballroom. To Fannie Gorc went the honor of presiding over the big affair and queen of the evening.
