For the young artists at Lakeridge Middle School, the annual art show at the Bonney Lake Library provides an opportunity to not only see their works on display, but also to show the community they may have the wrong impression of junior high students.
“Most adults think junior high kids aren't the best people in the world,” said seventh-grader Dakota Klemme, adding that the art show may show a different side of kids their age.
For many of the artists, however, including Klemme, it is also a chance to show off their talents.
“I think it's a great opportunity,” said Nephi Smith. “It's kind of awesome to have your art displayed for the public.”
“It gets you excited to see what you can draw,” Klemme said.
The show, put on by art teacher Karla Banks, is now in its third year at the library. Banks does two shows each year, one in the fall and another in the spring.
Comprised of dozens of works by more than 50 Lakeridge students, Banks said the show is always a great chance to see what her classes can do.
For many of her students, art provides another opportunity to express themselves.
“You put your feelings in the project you are doing,” said Carissa Dukowitz, who also said seeing the work on display helps boost the self-confidence of herself and other young artists, especially those who, like her, want to move into art-related fields.
“Art is like another way of writing down your feelings,” Smith agreed.
Banks said she is pleased to see the kids get excited about the shows.
“I have a lot of kids who get this artwork framed,” Banks said. “It's great to see they keep their work.”
The Lakeridge Art Show continues through Saturday at the Bonney Lake Library, 18501 90th St. E.
