Black Diamond police host boating class

Make sure to get your education card before heading out to the water.

Local boaters needing their state Boater Education Card can attend a Black Diamond safety course at the end of the month.

The Black Diamond Police Department will be hosting their class on March 25, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the department. Anyone 16 and under will need to be accompanied by an adult.

Once you complete the course, students will need to send in their application for the Boater Education Card to Washington State Parks with a $10 check or money order and the proof of course completion.

Boaters only need the education card to operate a boat with 15 horsepower or greater. Boaters born before January 1, 1955 are exempt but may choose to get a card if they plan to boat in Canada or Oregon since both require mandatory education.

Those who do other boating activities like cruising, sailing, kayaking, or paddleboarding are also encouraged to take the class to stay on top of the law and know the basics of water safety.

If you have questions or to register for the class, please contact Joann Sloss at jsloss@blackdiamondwa.gov or 360-851-4450.
