The Bonney Lake City Council will accept applications for pro and con election committees on the metropolitan parks district through Friday.

The council, as prescribed by law, will then select the three members for each committee at their Feb. 12 council meeting.

A metropolitan parks district is a voter-approved district contiguous with the city’s borders that would have the ability to levy a property tax to be used exclusively for park needs.

The job of the committees is to write a statement in favor of – or in opposition to – the upcoming ballot measure. The statement must be submitted to Pierce County Elections by March 11.

So far, 10 applications have been received. Half are for the “pro” committee and half for the “con.”

Pierce County will then provide each committee with the opposing side’s statement so they may submit a rebuttal by March 13.

The word limit on the original statement is 150 words with a limit of 75 on the rebuttal.

There is a limit of three official members for each committee. The city will use the regular application for membership form, available on the city’s website. Applicants should write, “MPD Pro Committee” or “MPD Con Committee” on the line asking for the name of the board for which you are applying.

Interested parties are asked to submit a form as soon as possible. Forms are available on the city’s website at www.citybonneylake.org, under the “government” and then “committees, commissions and boards” tabs.
