Bonney Lake High School honored senior students showing “excellence of mind and strength of character” at its 2010 Senior Showcase May 26.
Ten students were honored for distinction in their high school careers.
Natosha Lyonais was awarded for her combined accomplishments in academia and sports. She has earned varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track. In addition, she demonstrated “a spirit of kindness and caring for those around her.”
Jesse Proctor served as an ASB officer and was noted for his hard work in the classroom, involvement in school-promoting extracurriculars and growth as a leader. He was a member of the Student Ambassador Program, which welcomes freshmen to the high school setting.
Karlie Pyl distinguished herself in the classroom by contributing to a positive learning environment. She is a member of the National Honor Society and played in the Panthers band and directed other students in competitions and school functions.
Ashley Alvarez was Bonney Lake High School’s Daffodil Princess for the 2009-2010 season. She is a member of NHS, is an AP student and a student ambassador.
“Ashley has dedicated many hours of her time to Bonney Lake High School and deserves the honor of being recognized as one of our amazing seniors from the class of 2010,” AnnMarie Casner said. “Ashley is amazing!”
Presenters Amy Fuller and Shirley Baker said of Kent Wilson that they had never seen a transformation like the one they saw in him. He was nominated for a MESH (Math, Engineering, Science and Health) Award, which recognizes students with an aptitude for science. In class, he helped other students understand key concepts while showing humor and leadership.
Nick Bendon was captain of the Panthers wrestling team and founded a team Bible study group that continues to meet. He volunteered and was a student ambassador.
“It is this type of positive attitude that lets me know that he will be successful at the next level of athletics, constantly giving back to his academics and whatever else life might throw at him,” Coach Tony Clarke said.
Melissa Day is the ASB president, debate captain, Local Area of School Councils sergeant at arms and a member of the District Youth Council. She has never missed a day of school, save for field trips and athletic competitions. She was recognized for being a self-motivated student and leader.
Saoreese Eliason underwent a sudden culture shock when she moved to the United States from Liberia, West Africa in 2005. She immediately went into high school after missing out on middle Garry Shider due to civil strife in her native country. She was a member of the dance team, NHS and the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America.
Will Edwards has been a perennial entrant in science fairs since before his high school career. He most recently achieved semi-finalist status in the Intel Talent Search for his research in myoelectrics—the study of electricity and muscles. His accolades brought BLHS recognition and grant money.
Tracy Hare shouldered a full load of AP classes and extracurricular activities during her high school career. She was captain of the golf team and lettered in fast pitch, track, gymnastics and the culinary team.
Awards presenters were Career and Technical Educator Shannon Carr-Cohen, Social Studies Teacher Thomas Ostrander, Social Studies Teacher Josh Gaydos, Science Teacher Jerry Turner, Math Teacher Kathleen Kirkpatrick, Office Manager AnnMarie Casner, Vocal Music Director Amy Fuller, English Teacher Shirley Baker, Social Studies Teacher Tony Clarke, Learning Specialist Ruth Conrad, Career and Technical Educator Tricia Littlefield, Shannon Thissen and Culinary Team Coach Kahale Ahina.
