Enumclaw police have taken a look at the city’s four downtown public parking lots, noted areas of inconsistency and suggested the City Council take steps to bundle the paved quartet into one unified package.

Police Chief Jim Zoll went before the council the evening of Sept. 26 when the matter was first presented.

A memo to the council from police stated, “We believe a few minor changes…will bring all four parking lots within our code standards, reduce confusion…eliminate current liability concerns…and provide conformity for enforcement measures should such measures become necessary.”

The four lots in question are:

• the “chamber lot,” which fronts on Cole Street between Initial and Stevenson avenues.

• the “Rotary lot” along Railroad Street between Griffin and Stevenson avenues.

• the small “Logger Legacy lot” along Railroad Street adjacent to the public library.

• the “library lot” next to the library, along Railroad Street between Myrtle and Marshall avenues.

The plan is to provide all with the proper signage, identifying them as “all day” parking lots with a 24-hour maximum stay. Specifically targeted is the small lot closest to the Logger Legacy memorial. It has a sign limiting parking to two hours, in conflict with current city codes. Also singled out is the chamber lot, which has signage allowing only three-hour and six-hour parking.

For liability reasons, it is noted all four lots should have signs noting overnight camping is prohibited.

The council approved the ordinance on first reading and will contemplate final adoption during an upcoming meeting.
