A pack of Cub Scouts from the Bonney Lake Elementary School took a vote and did the right thing.

Pack 501, the Webelo Den, found out the Bonney Lake Food Bank needed some help and the boys voted to give up a planned hike to stand in front of the Fred Meyer for several hours and collect food. They also collected food at school.

The fourth- and fifth-grade boys carried nearly 200 pounds of food into the Bonney Lake Food Bank and collected more than $300 for the cause.

The boys read about the shortage at the food bank in a Nov. 1 article in The Courier-Herald, as did many other residents around the region.

Along with the Cub Scouts, people from all over the area reached out and helped fill the shelves at the food bank.

&#8220It's been amazing,” said Melvain Donyes, director of the food bank. &#8220I've never seen anything like it. It's just been a great blessing.”

Since the article, the food bank has received more than 6,600 pounds of food worth approximately $10,000. The food bank also received two $5,000 donations: one from the Fortune Family Foundation of Kirkland and a second from a man living in Buckley.

The man sent the check by mail, but it was sent back by the Post Office because the food bank doesn't receive mail. The man drove to the food bank and personally delivered the money.

Donyes said many other people have donated money in all ranges of amounts.

After the Cub Scouts delivered the food and money, they headed off for their regular Webelo meeting. The featured speaker was Mayor Neil Johnson, who talked with them about being good citizens.
