Board receives appear, then awards bid

Work will begin immediately to replace the Enumclaw Middle School roof and heating and cooling system. The Enumclaw School Board awarded the contract at a July 8 special meeting with the anticipation the project will be complete before the start of classes.

Superintendent Mike Nelson said he’s been with the district for 11 years and the Enumclaw Middle School roof has been a topic of conversation and levy and bond elections the entire time. He and the board are excited the community passed an $8.4 million technology and capital facilities levy in February to do the work. The roof and heating and cooling systems were part of the levy and $2.25 million will go to this project.

Seven viable bids were received June 23, but a bid protest delayed the board’s decision. Board President Cathy Dahlquist acknowledged these are tough times and the process was handled appropriately. Wick Contractors of Bellevue, Wash., received the contract.

Butch Reifert with Mahlum Architects said the roofing material will be a thermal plastic membrane with a 20-year warranty.

“You’re definitely getting a better roof,” he said. He said the material has been used to patch the roof through the years and the district has been quite pleased.

The roof over the classrooms is expected to be done Aug. 30 with the gymnasium and office area to follow Sept. 3. The contract calls for penalties should the work not be completed on time, district business manager Randy Stocker said.
