East Pierce puts out small fire in Fred Meyer storeroom

East Pierce Fire & Rescue firefighters put out a small fire in the storeroom of the Sumner Fred Meyer’s storeroom last night.

A fire unit responded to a call from the store, zooming by an in-progress city council meeting with sirens blaring.

Fire Chief Jerry Thorsen, who was present at the council meeting, reported that the emergency had been taken care of quickly.

“It probably wasn’t large enough to set off the building’s sprinkler system,” he said to the council about 45 minutes after the emergency. “I’m willing to bet they (the store) have already opened their doors back up.”

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
