EHS students join forces with middle schoolers to present ‘Aladdin Jr.’

It’s a whole new world for Enumclaw Middle School choir students who are putting on their first musical production.

“This is their first time doing a musical, so it’s pretty exciting,” said Enumclaw High School senior Kameron Jacobs, who is helping EMS choir director Paul Scott, EHS drama teacher Darrell Miller and fellow seniors Molly Semon and Sarah McKinley, who are directing.

The 56 sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students will sing and dance their way through “Aladdin Jr.” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Enumclaw High School auditorium. Admission is $3.

Semon and McKinley are using the experience to fulfill a portion of their senior project, while Scott and Miller, who often collaborate on projects, see it as an opportunity to branch out and bring drama to the middle school level. EHS graduate Amanda Kelly is aiding the group with choreography, while fellow alumna Emily Voss is helping with costuming. Miller’s stage craft class will provide the production’s technical stuff, lights, music and more.

“I have an absolute love for music and theater,” Semon said, and she said she wanted to share that with middle school students. Directing the production was the perfect experience.

Last year, Miller and students worked with Thunder Mountain Middle School on a similar project.

Scott’s students auditioned for lead roles and they have been rehearsing since December to bring Agrabah, the “city of enchantment,” alive.

Based on the Disney hit, it is a production filled with magic, mayhem and flying carpets. The 80-minute production includes the Academy Award-winning score with Alan Menken music and popular lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice – songs like “A Whole New World” and “Friend Like Me.”

Kelby Smith will play Aladdin, the story’s hero. Kourtney Kam will be Jasmine, the princess, and Savana Hansen will portray Genie.

Bailey Webster, Katie Wilson, Jaydon Osborn, Justus Rainwater and Jared Couch are all narrators.

Juliana Jacobson will play Razoul, Tyler Harris will be Iago and Devin Newell will be Jafar. Stacia Richenburg will be Magic Carpet and Ian Deplazes will be Sultan.
