Entries for Sumner “Write in the Valley” writing contest and work critique due tomorrow, Sept. 9

Tomorrow, Sept. 9, is the deadline to turn in 10 pages of work for critique, or demonstrate your chops for short-short fiction on a writing prompt.

Are you a budding writer, or an experienced yet unpublished author? Looking for input on your work from like-minded authors?

Tomorrow, Sept. 9, is the deadline to turn in 10 pages of work for critique, or demonstrate your chops for short-short fiction on a writing prompt.

The critique and contest are two parts of the Sumner Arts Commission’s Write In The Valley author’s event, to be held Sept. 17 at the senior center.

The work critique is open to all styles, but is limited to 10 pages of written work.

The writing contest follows the prompt “Night at the Library.” The rules are:

• No greater than 750 words.

• The characters’ names are Emma and George.

• Their relationship is up to you: they can be family, friends, acquaintances, or total strangers.

• They can be any age.

• The story must be set in a library, but it can be any library.

• Emma and George were accidentally locked inside the library at closing time. A storm knocks out the power; the only available illumination comes from the streetlights seen from the windows. George’s cell phone is dead and Emma only has one signal bar left on her own mobile. They spend the night in the building. What happens outside those plot points is up to the writer.

Entries for both events are to be sent as attachments to Sally Abrams’ email sallya@ci.sumner.wa.us. Work critiques must have the subject line “Authors Event,” and entries to the contest must have the subject line “Writing Contest.”

Write In The Valley will be held Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Sumner Senior Center is located at 15506 62nd St. Ct. E.
