East Pierce Fire and Rescue 21st annual open house is scheduled from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the East Pierce headquarters station at 18421 Veterans Memorial Drive East.
The free health and safety fair showcases programs and services provided by the fire district, including demonstrations by its special operations teams.
Featuring more than a dozen booths, the open house is held in cooperation with other public safety partners including the Bonney Lake Police, Sumner Police, Pierce County Sheriff’s Departments, the Pierce County Department of Emergency Management and the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
“The highlight every year for most kids is the chance to play firefighter,” said East Pierce Lieutenant Eric McLeroy. Younger children suit up in pint-size firefighter gear to put out a “fire” and perform a “rescue.” Older children are offered a more challenging course, shooting water from a hose at a target and performing a “rescue” on a mannequin.
Parents and children can test their fire safety knowledge. Live demonstrations are scheduled throughout the event featuring the use of tools and equipment, like the “Jaws of Life.”
The popular Airlift Northwest medical helicopter is scheduled to land around 1:30 p.m. Those interested will get an up close look at the helicopter and a chance to chat with the crew.
Ice cream, popcorn and cotton candy will be available from the International Association of Firefighters, Local 3520. Sonic Drive-In and Urban Timber will be on hand selling food and beverages. Music will be provided by the Puget Sound Firefighters Pipes and Drums Band. Enter to win a Seahawks Basket at the East Pierce Fire and Rescue Foundation booth. Funds raised support important public education programs and the Sentimental Journey program.
Several simulators provide a unique perspective to particular dangers. State Farm Insurance will present the distracted driving simulator. It has been an effective teaching tool for drivers of all skill levels. Washington State Fire Marshal’s representatives will offer presentations at the Residential Fire Sprinkler Demonstration Trailer. Operation Lifesaver’s Train Simulator illustrates how to be safe around train tracks. Young children can even practice calling for help at the 911 Simulator.
East Pierce firefighters will be selling life jackets, bike helmets and multi-sport helmets at discounted prices. All purchases include a custom fit. Children and adult sizes will be available on a first come, first served basis. Flu shots will be offered by Rite Aid Pharmacy for $25. The Bonney Lake officers will be collecting old medications as part of their Take Back Prescription Drugs program.
Free parking is available at the Pierce Transit Park and Ride at 184th Avenue East, off state Route 410 East. A dedicated shuttle will run to and from the East Pierce headquarters station during the event.
